A frightened rescue dog who arrived at Manchester Dogs’ Home in heartbreaking condition is now ready to take the next step in his journey – finding the patient and loving family who can show him that life doesn’t have to be frightening.
Meet Bruce, a timid boy who had an incredibly difficult start in life.
When Bruce arrived at Manchester Dogs’ Home, he was extremely thin and suffering from a severe skin condition. Much of his body was bald, red and painfully inflamed, and it was clear that he had not received the care he desperately needed.
For the team at Manchester Dogs’ Home, helping Bruce recover has been about far more than veterinary treatment. It has been about giving him time, patience, reassurance and, most importantly, showing him that people can be kind.
Bruce has received numerous veterinary treatments on site, costing the charity more than £1000, alongside specialist food to help him gain weight and the ongoing costs of caring for him while he recovers.
The team have worked tirelessly with him, never rushing his progress and giving him the time and TLC he needs. And the difference is incredible.
His fur is beginning to grow back. He is gaining much-needed weight and, most importantly, the team are starting to see glimpses of the happier, brighter dog underneath the fear.
“Sadly, Bruce is not an isolated case. Recently, we have seen an increase in stray dogs coming through our doors in extremely poor condition, particularly with severe skin problems. These dogs often costs the charity thousands of pounds to care for as they require veterinary treatment, specialist food and weeks or even months of care before they are ready to find their forever homes. Every one of them deserves that second chance, but the financial cost to a charity like ours is significant.”

There is still a long way to go for Bruce emotionally.
The world can be a very frightening place for him, and when he feels overwhelmed, he can become extremely nervous and shut down. His confidence will not develop overnight, and his future adopter will need to understand that helping Bruce feel safe will be a long-term commitment.
But for someone with the patience and experience to give him that chance, the rewards could be enormous.
Once Bruce begins to trust someone, a completely different side of his personality emerges. He is affectionate, playful and loving, and enjoys being close to the people he feels safe with. The team believe that there is a wonderful dog waiting to emerge as Bruce continues to build his confidence.
Bruce is looking for an experienced owner who has previously cared for very nervous or fearful dogs and understands the importance of allowing a dog to progress at their own pace.
His ideal home would be quiet, patient and secure, with a private, secure garden. Bruce would be happiest as the only dog in the household, where he can receive all the love, attention and reassurance he needs. He cannot live with cats, and due to his nervous nature, the charity would prefer children in the home to be aged 14 or over.
Potential adopters will also need to be prepared to attend multiple meet-and-greets with Bruce before an adoption can take place. This is not a process that can be rushed – Bruce needs the opportunity to gradually build trust and form a relationship with his new family.
Bruce has already overcome so much.
He has gone from a frightened, painfully unwell dog with little reason to trust the world, to a boy who is slowly learning what kindness feels like.
Now, Manchester Dogs’ Home is hoping that someone will look beyond his nervousness and see the incredibly special dog that the team have come to know.
Bruce doesn’t need someone to rescue him overnight. He needs someone willing to walk beside him, one small step at a time.
For the right person, giving Bruce a second chance could be one of the most rewarding things they ever do.
