Keeping Dogs Safe on Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night can be stressful for dogs because of the loud noises, flashing lights, and strong smells from fireworks.

To help keep your dog calm and safe, it’s important to plan ahead.

  • Walk early: Take your dog out for a walk before it gets dark and before fireworks start.

  • Feed early: Give them their dinner earlier in the evening so they can settle before the noise begins.

  • Create a safe space: Set up a quiet, comfortable area where your dog can hide or relax. Close curtains and doors to reduce light and sound.

  • Secure your home: Make sure windows, doors, and garden gates are closed to prevent your dog from escaping if they get frightened.

  • Use identification: Ensure your dog is wearing a collar with an ID tag and that their microchip details are up to date.

  • Stay with them: Stay calm and reassuring—your presence can comfort them.

  • Mask the noise: Play the TV, radio, or calming music to help drown out the sound of fireworks.

  • Let them hide: Don’t force them out of their hiding place; it’s where they feel safest.

  • Keep them occupied: Give them toys, treats, or chews to distract and soothe them.

With preparation and patience, you can help your dog feel more secure during Bonfire Night celebrations
